Reopening Specola Museum
The countdown to the reopening of 'La Specola' has begun.
On 22 February, the museum reopens its doors to visitors after being closed for renovation and modernisation work on its historic premises in Palazzo Bini Torrigiani, Via Romana. The event is part of the programme dedicated to the centenary of the University of Florence.
It will be a larger museum in terms of routes and contents, with works that have been restored, others that have been cleaned up, and still others that have been recovered and re-proposed in the layouts.
Visitors will be able to admire two completely new wings of the museum, dedicated to mineralogy and ceroplastics, with works never exhibited before, such as the extraordinary botanical waxes. But they will also find the zoological collection and anatomical waxes. Because 'La Specola' is new and ancient at the same time, an almost unique reality: the first of the science museums to open its doors to the citizens according to the Enlightenment project of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Tuscany, and one of the few to have a venue that has historical value in itself.
